AREAS OF CONTENT KNOWLEDGE

Content Standard 1.1

SKILLS

CAEP Standard Outcome 1.1 states that candidates demonstrate an understanding and are able to apply knowledge and skills specific to their discipline.  I have completed my courses for my Masters degree in Reading. These courses taught me the skills I need to master this standard. Below are three artifacts that I believe will demonstrate that I have reached this standard.  By mastering this standard, I believe that  I will be able to teach my students the skills that will help them become successful readers.

Content Standard 1.2

My first artifact is my Philosophy of Curriculum course. It was written in three parts. The first part is a reflection of curriculum theories. The second part is a review of how critical pedagogy has an influence on communities and around the world. The third part is my Philosophy of Curriculum. I believe that learning is a community effort and it's my job as a teacher to make meaningful relationships with students as well as their families.

Artifact 2

My second artifact is from my Foundations of Reading course. This artifact is a researched instructional plan that I created to use when I worked with a 5th grade student. This document discusses theoretical frameworks that I used to create this instructional plan.

Artifact 3

My third artifact is from my Reading & the English Language Learner course. This is a brief summary of tutoring sessions that I had with an ELL student.

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES

The CAEP Standard Outcome 1.2 states that candidates use research and evidence to develop school environments that support and assess P-12 students’ learning and their own professional practice specific to their discipline. I interpret this standard as saying that I can use what I have learned and use it in my classroom with my students effectively. I chose two artifacts for this standard. I believe that as teachers, this standard is most important. We become more effective teachers when we use research and evidence-based practices to teach our students.

Artifact 1

My first artifact is a post from a discussion board from my Foundations of Reading course. This discussion post describes the structure of my classroom and curriculum. This post is a brief explanation of a time when I found a topic that one of my student's was interested in and how it impacted his learning during that time.

Artifact 2

My second artifact is from my Comprehension & Study Strategies course. This paper consists of demographics of the community, school, and my classroom. It also has a 5 day lesson plan of what I taught my students. The consistency of my weekly lessons with my students made a huge impact on their progress.

Content Standard 1.3

STANDARDS

CAEP Standard Outcome 1.3 states that candidates apply content and discipline-specific knowledge as reflected in state and or national discipline specific standards. Each teacher should use the standards provided by their state to produce meaningful and effective lessons to ensure learning is present in their classroom. My district/building administration also sets growth goals to ensure that we, as teachers, are always improving ourselves as well.

Artifact 1

My first artifact is from my Comprehension & Study Strategies course. This paper consists of demographics of the community, school, and my classroom. It also has a 5 day lesson plan of what I taught my students. The consistency of my weekly lessons with my students made a huge impact on their progress.

Artifact 2

My second artifact is from my Emergent Literacy and Beginning Reading course. This artifact contains a link to an e-book that I published and a brief summary of why I wrote the book and who it was written for. I believe that this activity is a great use of technology, but also a great way to keep students engaged in learning.

Content Standard 1.4

SUPPORT

The CAEP Standard Outcome1.4 states that the candidate demonstrates skills and commitment to creating supportive environments that afford all P-12 students access to rigorous college and career ready standards.  I have two artifacts that demonstrate this.

Artifact 1

Content Standard 1.5

TECHNOLOGY

The CAEP Standard Outcome 1.5 states that the candidate will model and apply technology, standards as they design. Implement and assess learning experiences/environments to engage students and improve learning; and enrich professional practices. I chose three artifacts for this standard. I attempt to use technology as much as possible to keep students interested and engaged in learning.

Artifact 1

My first artifact is from my Emergent Literacy and Beginning Reading course. This artifact contains a link to an e-book that I published and a brief summary of why I wrote the book and who it was written for. I believe that this activity is a great use of technology, but also a great way to keep students engaged in learning. I have had several students ask if they can create their own stories. We will be doing this as a writing assignment in the future.

Artifact 2

My second artifact is from my Supporting Striving Readers course. I created a timeline of important events to show the evolution of education. It is designed to show the important pieces of history that are important to my classroom and students.

Artifact 3

My third artifact is from my Writing and Spelling Development and Instruction course. I created a letter to brand new special education teachers entering into a BD/ED classroom. I give advice on what to do during stressful times and ideas to use to encourage good behaviors.

Content Standard 1.6

ASSESSMENT

The CAEP Standard Outcome 1.6 states that candidates document using multiple measures, creating a supportive learning environment that contributes to an expected level of P-12 student learning. As a special education teacher, I use multiple assessments and data collection to ensure that my students have mastered their IEP goals and Missouri Learning Standards.

Artifact 1

My first artifact is from my Foundations of Reading course. This artifact is a researched instructional plan that I created to use when I worked with a 4th grade student. This document discusses theoretical frameworks that I used to create this instructional plan.

Artifact 2

My second artifact is from my Supporting Striving Readers course. This document contains my thoughts of why the student in the scenario is struggling and what assessments I would use to track her progress.

Content Standard 1.7

PROFESSIONALISM

Effectively apply the professional knowledge and skills to Pre-K through 12 teaching. This standard to me is showing progress in student learning by researching current effective practices.
